October 2000

CFOB Fort Frances ON 640 heard in Sweden!  Under a selective Manitoba skip.
The Parkalompolo expedition was a big success! Separate report on EXP page.

1.10       Nothing.
2.10       Much better sound but only very weak signals. 1700 (IA?) and 1620 (NE?) both had one
station each fairly constant for over an hour around local sunrise. 0320-0440 UTC.
3.10       Nothing noted on 1700/1620.
4.10       Very strong signals from Greenland on 570/650 long before midnight  but did not listen.
Recordings did not give much but I've seen that there was a very fine Alberta skip on lower
              frequencies this night.
5.10       No listening in the night but probaly fair signals on many frequencies as the night video gave
1230 CHFC for three hours. See below. I just by chance happend to switch on at 0830 local
time and found lots of strong Alberta and B.C. Stations.  It lasted for 45 minutes and since the
europeans were almost nonexistet it was not hard to identify a lot of the ones heard. This while
I did check my on-line systems for mail, work orders etc. I also downloaded the weekly anti-
virus update during this and no interference al all from my systems five meters from the radio.
6.10        Videotapes from this night gave nothing but after sunrise some good signals from PQ/AB/MN.
7.10        From just before midninght UTC very fine signals from the Canadian prairie.  And this lasted all
night and a little bit into the day. Since I already have these stations verified and not much left
to look for I just listened around for most of the night and had a nice time! I managed to pick up
two stations I have not QSL from which was more than I had hoped for!
8.10        Not much in the night except for short PQ or MN peaks. Nothing on the GY:s in the morning.
9.10        Probably not too bad, but I did not have time listening for more than half an hour. I did no
videorecording this night and in the morning only on graveyard frequencies which says nothing
about reception of more powerful stations... At sundown I heard Korea 1170 and KBRW-680.
10.10      I just listened for 20 minutes and only a handful AB/SK stations were heard w/ weak signals.
11-14.10 Nothing!
15.10      A few very weak signals for short periods of time, but useless signals for reporting anything.
16-19.10 Probably nothing, but away from home most of this time so almost no listening at all.
20-29.10 PAX8 DX expedition together with SW, A and JOB.  Success!  See separate report/log!
30-31.10 Work/hotel nights so no listening.

Dxpedition to Parkalompolo in October
Parkalompolo, in the far north east of Sweden, was invaded by DX:ers and wires the two
last weeks of October. This was a first test of this new QTH in what once was the
village school. Earler PAX expeditions all have gone to a private cabin here
so this QTH has not been tested before for local QRN etc.  But several
hundred meters of coaxial cable and a few HF amplifiers now did
guarantee a noise free environment... Worked out well! First
out to this new location were the well known swedish
medium wave DX:ers SW, A, JOB and BOS. This
new PAX QTH was PERFECT! Thanks to A
for finding this place and to SW for
developing the perfect set of
splitters / HF-amlifiers/
baluns needed!
